  • • Stay Safe! - Check the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) Travel Advice
  • • (or call 0845 850 2829) for the country you're travelling to; are they advising against
  • • travel to this area?
  • • Travel Insurance - Get travel insurance and check that the cover is appropriate - see The
  • • Importance of Travel Insurance
  • • Vaccinations - Check what vaccinations you need at least 6 weeks before you go and
  • • consider whether you need to take extra health precautions - Department of Health.
  • • Passport & Visa - Ensure you have a valid passport that is in good condition and that you
  • • have the necessary visas
  • • Make copies - Make copies of your passport (including any visa pages); insurance policy
  • • including the 24-hour emergency number and ticket details. Leave these copies, your
  • • itinerary and contactdetails with family and friends
  • • Research - Get a good guidebook and get to know your destination; find out about local
  • • laws and customs.
  • • Money - Take enough foreign currency for your trip and some back-up funds e.g. travellers
  • • cheques, Sterling or US Dollars.
  • • Qualifications - Some jobs will require certain skills or qualifications. Teaching English abroad
  • • generally requires a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certificate before you go.
  • • Do all your research before you go!
